Australian Plantation Forestry Climate Change


As part of the Australian Government’s Forest Industries Climate Change Research Fund program, GHD was engaged to examine how plantation fire risk profiles may change under climate change scenarios.

One of the key climate change risks for the plantation forest industry is increasing losses from fire, coupled with rising bushfire risk management costs.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Burgos Wind Project


The EDC Burgos Wind Power Corporation engaged GHD to advise on the environmental and social impact of a wind farm project.

GHD prepared an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study for the 165 MW wind farm located in a 618 ha project development block that is situated in a site declared as a cultural resource (Palpalokada Landscape) and reserved as an area for tourist development.

Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary Wetland Design


We have placed a key role in the reconstruction of the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary, one of the largest wetland rehabilitation projects of its kind ever undertaken in Western Australia.

The deteriorating manmade wetland was experiencing poor water quality in both the wetland and the adjacent Bayswater Brook. This in turn was impacting bird numbers, water quality of the Swan River and public amenities.

Koondrook-Perricoota Forest, NSW: Vegetation Condition Monitoring Program


GHD is assisting the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (through Forestry Corporation of NSW) to understand the response of the iconic Koondrook-Perricoota Forest to flooding and the application of ‘environmental water.’ The forest forms part of the second largest River Red-gum floodplain forest in Australia and has been under significant stress in recent decades due to river regulation and drought.

Since 2013, GHD has undertaken a five-year forest-wide monitoring program to determine change in vegetation condition in wetlands, forest understorey, individual trees and the overall forest stand.

NRM Practice Change


Much of the investment in Natural Resource Management (NRM) in Australia is targeted towards fostering changes in land management practices. There is therefore value in developing tools and resources that will help regional NRM bodies and other investors to understand the people whose practices they are seeking to change and hence, how that change can best be fostered.

The "Making Successful Investments in NRM Practice Change" project was a four year action learning project, with the project team from GHD working in close collaboration with staff from ten regional NRM bodies across Australia.

Willow Run Creek Site, Michigan


The Willow Run Creek Site involved the remediation of over 340,000 cubic yards of polychlorinated biphenyl impacted sediments and soil. GHD developed a program of pre-design studies, including pilot-scale dredging/dewatering studies, to determine the optimal method of sediment removal and processing.

The selected remedy involved dewatering of the work area, water treatment, and solidification of the sediments to provide the necessary strength for placement in a site-dedicated consolidation disposal facility (CDF). The CDF was designed to meet stringent Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste disposal facility standards.

Wyaralong Dam Turtle Monitoring Program, Seqwater


GHD is playing a key role in helping Seqwater manage and monitor potential impacts of dam construction and operation on four species of freshwater turtle population. Our team designed and implemented the monitoring program to comply with legislative requirements, facilitate the identification of potential impacts and the implementation of adaptive management.

As part of this project, monitoring of the turtle population was undertaken above and below the dam wall every six months for the duration of the construction of the dam, and for the first five years of dam operation. Freshwater turtle populations were sampled using cathedral traps with individuals captured identified to species level and life history parameters recorded. Captured turtles were tagged with monel foot tag and released at the site of capture to assess turtle movement behavior through mark recapture. Annual monitoring of potential turtle nesting habitat was undertaken during the peak turtle nesting season over the five years of operation. Bank margins within five survey areas were assessed for nesting habitat suitability and systematically searched for both direct and indirect evidence of turtle nesting. Turtle monitoring program reporting was conducted following each survey event for compliance with Project approval conditions.

David May

David is a Principal in Natural Resource Management (NRM) with 23 years' experience in river health, catchment management and marine science. He has extensive technical experience in the management and delivery of a wide range of projects including the development of ecological restoration objectives, river and wetland management plans and strategies, environmental water reserve assessments, ecological risk assessments, river restoration plans and activities, environmental monitoring and assessment, evaluation and strategic planning.

One of David’s key technical attributes is in the assessment of ecological risk. His recent projects include the assessment of wastewater and dewatered groundwater discharges, sediment quality, ecological threatening processes, marine pests and studies on the impacts of groundwater drawdown on vegetation.

Simon Lukies - Hobart

Simon is an environmental scientist with more than six years’ experience and specialises in the assessment of aquatic systems. He has taken a leading role in a wide variety of aquatic orientated projects with a focus on fish ecology, where he has conducted an extensive array of assessments including environmental flows and fish passage investigations/design.

He is highly experienced in a variety of fish sampling techniques, including fyke netting, seine netting, electrofishing, light trapping and drift netting. Simon is a member of the Australian Society for Limnology and the Australian Society for Fish Biology.

Dr Tim Wills - Melbourne

Dr Tim Wills is a principal botanist with more than 15 years’ experience in conservation biology, fire ecology research and ecological impact assessment across Australia. He is recognised as a Certified Environmental Practitioner by the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand and has extensive experience in vegetation mapping, botanical assessment, threatened species survey, biodiversity legislation, and the design and establishment of ecological monitoring programs across a broad range of ecosystems.

Tim is an experienced ecologist who regularly works with government agencies and private clients on large multi-disciplinary projects with competing environmental, social and economic issues. He is skilled at data collection, analysis, reporting, providing expert evidence and liaising with a range of stakeholders to achieve ecologically sustainable outcomes.

Dominic Adshead - Sydney

Dominic is a principal consultant with more than 20 years' experience in natural resources and land management. His experience extends from high level strategic and corporate level planning, through to the implementation of on-ground operational activities. Dominic’s skills include natural hazard risk assessment; forest inventory, monitoring and management; delivery of multi-agency natural resource workshops; development of environmental management systems; preparation of bushfire, biosecurity and risk management plans; conservation reserve and recreation management; and operational program delivery (prescribed burning, pest and weed control, trail construction and maintenance, environmental assessment, stakeholder consultation and threatened species survey).

Katie is a senior environmental scientist with more than four years’ experience. She has managed multi-disciplinary offshore oil and gas ecological surveys, construction environmental management plans, near-shore marine sampling and environmental permit applications for international petroleum industry firms, large multi-national construction companies and project management consultants.

She has also participated as a key field and reporting team member in Environmental Impact Assessments, environmental monitoring programs, ecological surveys, coral and seagrass relocation and Environmental Management plans. She has gained international experience in the environmental field having undertaken projects in the UK, Australia, Caribbean, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Ken Mierzwa

Ken has more than 23 years’ experience as a senior ecologist and project manager. His specialties include endangered species, habitat restoration and regulatory policy analysis. He has worked throughout the US as well as Thailand. Ken holds a federal recovery permit for the endangered Hine’s emerald dragonfly and helped design and implemented an ongoing long-term population monitoring effort for that species. He has been involved in conceptual design, permitting and construction monitoring of habitat restoration sites ranging in size from a few to several hundred hectares and including salt marsh, coastal dune, grassland, oak woodland, riparian/riverine and freshwater wetland sites. He is the author of several book chapters and numerous shorter articles on habitat restoration and amphibian and reptile conservation biology.

Ken has also worked on environmental aspects of large infrastructure projects including airports, highways, bridges, rail and high speed rail, commercial development and wastewater facilities. He has extensive NEPA experience and has worked closely with legal counsel during complex negotiations. Ken was also elected to three terms on the Ferndale, California City Council (2004-2013), and served as chair (2008, 2013) and vice-chair (2011) of the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District Board of Directors.
