Our waterways and coastal capability is an integral part of our service. We were involved in the water industry when the company started in 1928 and the skills of our staff have continued to grow as the company has expanded and diversified.

Today, GHD has one of Australia’s largest groups of dedicated water management professionals. We provide leading technical support for the study and management of all forms of waterways, including rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal areas.

GHD’s Waterways & Coastal offering service line covers background and baseline studies, strategic and planning studies, and impact assessments. We can work with you on all stages of the feasibility and design process through to the supervision of construction projects with respect to waterways and developments affecting waterways.

We focus on the interactions between the natural, built and social environments. Our work stretches across the globe, meaning you can benefit from experience in the urban, industrial, mining, agricultural, rural and environmental sectors.

East West Link

GHD has been working as part of the East West Link Planning Alliance alongside the NZ Transport Agency, Beca and Buddle Findlay since 2016 to deliver the suite of consents for the project with the aim of having the NZD1.25 to NZD1.85 billion project ‘tender ready’ by December 2017.

Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary Wetland Design

We have placed a key role in the reconstruction of the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary, one of the largest wetland rehabilitation projects of its kind ever undertaken in Western Australia.

The deteriorating manmade wetland was experiencing poor water quality in both the wetland and the adjacent Bayswater Brook. This in turn was impacting bird numbers, water quality of the Swan River and public amenities.

Terminales Canal de Chacao

Ingeniería terminales de transbordo Canal de Chacao - Región de Los Lagos, Chile.

El Ministerio de Obras Públicas contrató los servicios de GHD para realizar estudios básicos e ingeniería de detalles de las obras portuarias, terrestres y marítimas para nuevos terminales de transbordo en el Canal de Chacao, que conectan al continente con la Isla de Chiloé en el sur de Chile. Entre las obras proyectadas se encuentra ampliar las rampas existentes en Punta Coronel y Chacao para permitir que operen en toda situación de marea y además plantear la construcción de una rampa adicional en Punta Coronel, que permita manejar los servicios en períodos de alta demanda. También se incluyó proyectar terminales en los dos sectores, que cuenten con todo tipo de servicios para atender las necesidades de los pasajeros que esperan cruzar el canal.

Qatar Flood Study

GHD was engaged by the Qatar Ministry of Municipalities and Environment (MME) to undertake a comprehensive flood study of the entire country of Qatar.

Key outputs from the study included detailed flood inundation mapping of flood levels, depths, velocities and flood hazard at a high resolution, and recommendations on the incorporation of flood risk into strategic land use planning.

Sackville Rivers Floodplain Study

GHD was engaged by the Halifax Regional Municipality in Canada to update floodplain maps of the Sackville River and Little Sackville River.

Historically, flood-related risks within the lower reaches of the Sackville River in Nova Scotia, Canada, have been a significant issue. Continued urbanization and changing climate have been contributing to the increasing frequency of flooding in the watershed.

Terminal Pto.Williams

Diseño para el mejoramiento del terminal para transbordadores en Puerto Williams, Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena.

GHD fue contratado por el Ministerio de Obras Públicas de Chile para llevar a cabo los estudios y el diseño para dotar a la localidad de Puerto Williams de la infraestructura portuaria necesaria que permita mejorar la conectividad regular y el servicio de transporte marítimo público. El objetivo del estudio es desarrollar a nivel de ingeniería de detalles una solución con el fin de mejorar las condiciones de las maniobras de embarque y desembarque de personas, vehículos y carga en general en la localidad de Puerto Williams.

Nick Deeks

Nick is a civil and environmental engineer with 16 years’ experience in water resources engineering, drainage, water quality management, floodplain management, water cycle management, hydrology, hydraulics, civil design and project management. He has also worked in the road, rail and port transport industries, as well as the mining, property development and water sectors, predominantly in Australia. Experienced in managing water issues from early stage planning, through to concept design, detailed design, construction and operation, Nick currently leads a team of water resources engineers and scientists. He is also active on a number of industry bodies, including Stormwater Australia, the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities, and the Urban Development Institute of Australia.

Juraj Cunderlik

Juraj has more than 20 years’ experience in water resources engineering, climate change impacts and adaptation, and advanced numerical modelling. A registered professional engineer in Ontario and Nova Scotia, he is a member of the Canadian Water Resources Association, the American Geophysical Union, and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. Juraj is also the author and co-author of more than 70 publications and a reviewer for 15 national and international scientific journals.
